‘Brave New Pulp.’ This is the tagline for a small, niche publisher, Montag Press. The publisher’s mission is to tell new stories, original fiction, of the highest caliber. Montag take its name from the protagonist in Ray Bradbury’s novel, Fahrenheit 451. I've been designing books and book jackets for the publisher since 2012.
Starting out in advertising photography and advertising, I've always been interested in that one impactful image to tell a story. This applies to posters, album and book covers. Where books are concerned, I enjoy working with with the authors to make something that will help them communicate their story.
I was received recognition for one of my early book jackets, Stay, a collection of short stories centered around the town of Oakland and the baseball team, the Oakland Athletics. To date, I've completed around 80-plus jackets for publisher.
Type is a quiet, necessary communicator. Readers shouldn't be distracted by type and the book should be comfortable to read: But subtle choices in type, size, leading, indent, and layout— they all work to support the storytelling.
